The most common question Marine Impact receives from people considering an internship is some version of this: am I qualified enough? The answer, in most cases, is yes. Marine conservation internships are not designed for people who already have careers in marine biology. They are designed for people who want to build one, or who want to contribute to real fieldwork before deciding.
Here is what the programmes actually require, what is provided on arrival, and how to work out which option fits where you are now.
You do not need a marine biology degree
Marine Impact internships are open to applicants without a science background. The fieldwork methods you need, from transect surveys and photo-ID cataloguing to data entry protocols and species identification, are all taught on-site. What matters more than prior knowledge is physical fitness, a genuine interest in conservation, and the ability to follow research protocols carefully.
That said, a background in biology, ecology, environmental science, geography, or a related field will help you get more from the experience. You will recognise concepts faster, contribute to data analysis more quickly, and the fieldwork will connect more directly to your studies. It is an advantage. It is not a requirement.
Swimming and diving ability
Most marine research involves being in the water. Some programmes require you to hold a PADI Open Water certification before you arrive. Others allow you to complete your Open Water course during the first week of the internship, which can be arranged locally.
At minimum, you need to be a confident swimmer. You do not need to be an experienced diver to begin. Many volunteers complete their first open water dives as part of the programme itself, which means the diving qualification and the conservation fieldwork happen together.

Age and availability
Marine Impact internships accept applicants from age 18. There is no upper age limit. Programmes run on a rolling intake, typically starting every two weeks, which means you can join at a point that fits your schedule rather than waiting for a fixed academic intake date.
Most internships run for a minimum of four weeks. This is not arbitrary. Marine research data has value when it is collected consistently over time. A two-week stay produces limited scientific output. Four weeks gives you enough time to develop real competency in the methods, contribute meaningfully to ongoing datasets, and understand what the research is actually for.
Who these programmes are designed for
Marine Impact internships attract a specific mix of people. Gap year students who want field experience before or after university. Undergraduates in biology, geography, or environmental science looking for research credits or dissertation data. Recent graduates deciding whether to pursue postgraduate study in marine science. Career changers with a background in another field who are drawn to conservation work and want structured, credible experience before making the move.
What these groups share is not a qualification. It is a level of seriousness. The programmes are structured around genuine research, not wildlife tourism. If you are looking for a week of snorkelling with dolphins followed by a certificate, this is not that. If you want to spend weeks collecting data that contributes to published conservation outcomes, these programmes are built for you.
What you will learn
Across Marine Impact internship programmes, participants develop competency in a range of field research skills. These include underwater species identification, coral reef health assessment using established survey methods such as belt transects and point-intercept transects, marine mammal behaviour observation and recording, photo-identification techniques for species such as dolphins and whale sharks, acoustic monitoring, and data management for long-term ecological datasets.
These are skills that appear directly on postgraduate applications and conservation job descriptions. They are not introductory exercises. They are the methods marine biologists use in active research programmes.
The scientific credibility behind the work
Marine Impact was founded by the team behind African Impact, one of Africa’s most established volunteer organisations, in partnership with leading marine scientists including Dr Gretchen Goodbody-Gringley, a reef ecologist with a PhD from Harvard University. The research you contribute to is not staged for the benefit of volunteers. It feeds into long-term conservation datasets and informs strategy for reef and species protection in the Indian Ocean.
That combination matters if you are considering the programmes as part of a scientific career. The data you collect goes somewhere.
